2026 Dia de los Muertos Call for Altares
This Dia de los Muertos exhibition at the Whitehead Memorial Museum is designed to celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed away. This exhibition invites community members, organizations, and artists to share their own unique altares.
Submissions can be traditional or can have a modern interpretation. You will have an opportunity to share a photo or it, or a drawing that shows what your vision is with the intention that is stays respectful to the culture.
Altares cannot exceed 6 feet in height, 4 feet in width, and 4 feet in depth. Perishable food will not be permitted but pre-packaged items are acceptable (Ex. unopened candies, chips, etc.). Candles are also acceptable, but cannot be lit. Battery operated lights and candles are permitted. A 4ft x 4ft table will be provided. You must provide your own decorations and materials.

TIMELINE:
- Submission Deadline: Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 11:59pm
- Notification of acceptance: Saturday, October 3, 2026 by email
- Altar Installation: Saturday, October 10 - Saturday, October 17, 2026 during museum operating hours (Tuesday-Saturday 10am-6pm and Sunday 1pm-5pm)
- Exhibition Dates: Tuesday October 20 2026 - Thursday November 12, 2026
- Deinstallation date: Friday November 13, 2026 - Saturday November 14, 2026 (Altares need to be removed by this date or they will be removed by staff)
